meaningful work
FRIENDS PRO SOCIAL WORKS has developed this series of projects arising from needs and demands in the development of the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro (OSSHP). These projects represent significant resource challenges and have incalculable impact in the context of OSSHPs.
COLLECTION MANAGED COOPERATIVELY OSSHP-AAPOS
Cooperation plan between the AAPOS and the OSSHP to strengthen fundraising and guarantee the sustainability of the institution. It takes advantage of the public positioning and relationship potential of both organizations. The objective is to carry out collection activities without affecting the traditional actions of both institutions. Lines of action were initiated to prepare the annual plan, design the organizational structure and execute the project.
ACTIVE PROJECTS
LOCAL STRENGTHENING
The souvenir shop of Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro seeks to raise funds through the sale of products related to the pieces exhibited at the National Museum of Art of Guatemala (MUNAG) and the mission of the organization from on 2021.
The sales strategy includes visitors and allies of Obras Sociales. Year after year we have sought to expand the product portfolio, as well as update sales and promotion strategies in order to overcome the impact of Obras Sociales and the Asociación Amigos Pro Obras Sociales.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
OSSHP Hospital needs to build a treatment plant to comply with environmental and hospital standards. Construction has been postponed due to cost and the need for investment in equipment, as well as the benevolence of the authorities.
Having a treatment plant is important to regularize the legal situation of the hospital, mitigate the environmental impact, eliminate pathogenic bacteria, stabilize organic matter and avoid contamination of receiving bodies. Actions have been taken such as the design of the plant and the release of the site by the CNPAG. The project began in December 2022.
FUTURE PROJECTION
1
PATIENT SATISFACTION AUDIT
Proposal for measuring the perception and satisfaction of patients and companions regarding the health, education and care services provided by the OSSHP. The lack of this information prevents a full understanding of the institution's strengths and weaknesses in caring for patients. The objective is to improve the quality of care, satisfaction and fidelity of patients, identify needs and include innovations in services. Lines of action and an estimated cost of Q.5,000 were established.
4
PROJECT FOR THE RESTORATION AND RE-ADAPTATION OF THE SOCIAL WORKS HOSPITAL BUILDING
The OSSHP Hospital, located in a historic building from the 17th century, needs to be restored and read to preserve its splendor and functionality. The building has gone through various stages of reconstruction and currently houses multiple medical services, but lacks a comprehensive plan for its optimal use. Restoration and reading are necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of patients and to meet the growing demand for medical care. In addition, there are underutilized spaces that could be used. The general objective is to form a multidisciplinary team to carry out the restoration and reading project, as well as to evaluate other explosions in other facilities. The specific objectives include the completion of the study of structural damage, the intervention in different areas of the building, the optimization of services and infrastructure, and the reconstruction of systems such as hydraulic and electrical. An estimated investment of approximately US $900,000 is required. The necessary lines of action are to take on the challenge, form the team, elaborate a detailed plan, seek financing, carry out the interventions and evaluate the results.
7
HEALTH EDUCATION
It is proposed to implement a comprehensive health education program in the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro (OSSHP) with the support of AAPOS. The program will be based on volunteering, government, business, church and international cooperation. The objectives include improving the health of Guatemalans, expanding the mission and vision of the OSSHP, evaluating and expanding existing experiences, securing financial resources, and taking advantage of the impact in the country to obtain donations. The lines of action focus on preventive health, the creation of a teaching hospital, research programs, financing, and program implementation. The proposal is justified based on the vision of the OSSHP, the increase in demand for health services, the construction of new facilities and existing cooperation.
10
VOLUNTEER PLAN
It is proposed to strengthen and expand volunteering in the SOCIAL WORKS OF SANTO HERMANO PEDRO. The goal is to provide an enriching experience for both volunteers and patients, fostering human closeness and the encounter with God. It seeks to ensure the sustainability of the programs and disseminate the experience internationally. Actions include evaluating the current program, designing a new plan, obtaining and implementing the plan, and conducting evaluations.
2
COLLECTION MANAGED COOPERATIVELY OSSHP-AAPOS
Cooperation plan between the AAPOS and the OSSHP to strengthen fundraising and guarantee the sustainability of the institution. It takes advantage of the public positioning and relationship potential of both organizations. The objective is to carry out collection activities without affecting the traditional actions of both institutions. Lines of action were initiated to prepare the annual plan, design the organizational structure and execute the project.
5
AWNING IN SOCORRO VIRGIN SQUARE
The construction of a protective awning is proposed in the Plaza de los Hogares Virgen del Socorro, with the aim of facilitating recreational, cultural and religious activities in the place. Currently, two square canopies are used to protect patients, visitors and volunteers from the elements. The placement of a complete awning will provide greater comfort and modernity to the place, in harmony with the buildings and bright green areas. The objective is to offer adequate spaces for the recreation of patients and improve their quality of life. The estimated cost varies between $25,000 and $60,000 depending on the design and quality of materials.
8
ACQUISITION OF A CT MACHINE FOR THE OSSHP HOSPITAL
It is necessary to replace a CT scanner at the Pope Francisco Diagnostic Center because its useful life has ended and its radiation was harmful. The tomograph was important for the operation of the hospital and its lack affects both patients and surgical interventions. Options such as donating used equipment in good condition, purchasing used equipment for around $60,000, or purchasing new equipment with a price range between $100,000 and $250,000 are explored.
3
NEW SURGICAL ROOMS
The construction of two new surgical rooms is proposed next to the current operating rooms, carrying out minor remodeling in the area of the doctors' dining room. The existing operating rooms have been used for 27 years, performing approximately 150,000 surgeries. The construction of new rooms is justified by the high demand for surgeries from patients on the waiting list and groups of international doctors who want to perform free surgeries. In addition, there are spaces available in the hospital and the aim is to improve access to health services for disadvantaged Guatemalans. The objectives include serving patients on the waiting list, increasing international medical volunteering, improving donation income and the public image of the hospital. The lines of action include the design of spaces, the quantification of investments, the relocation of services and construction. The estimated cost is Q900,000 and includes civil works and basic services, not including equipment.
6
RECONSTRUCTION OF THE STRUCTURED WIRING OF THE OSSHP HOSPITAL
To improve the management of communications and the efficient use of digital systems in the OSSHS Hospital, it is necessary to migrate to fiber optic connectivity and build an adequate infrastructure with cabling, conduits, and connectors. The current internal network was installed in an uncoordinated manner and does not meet current needs. This has caused slow communication and system failures. The construction of a new infrastructure will improve the efficiency of the network, secure access to systems, increase security and facilitate administration. Goals include interconnecting all services, efficiently managing resources, controlling bandwidth, improving security, and preparing the network for future expansion. The lines of action involve approving the project, quoting options, seeking construction alternatives, obtaining municipal permits and securing financing. The estimated budget is Q.450,000.
11
OPERATING ROOMS PROJECT
It is planned to build three new operating rooms in the OSSHP Hospital, equipped with the latest technology and based in Information Technology and Research (ICTs-I). These operating rooms will initially be used to care for patients on the waiting list and later for educational health training activities, turning the hospital into a Teaching Hospital. The project will cover a total area of 12,572.247 ft2 and will be located in the south west sector of the current building. Specific objectives include expanding surgical services, facilitating the participation of international volunteer doctors, equipping operating theaters with advanced technology and ICT communication, and turning the hospital into a medical training center. The design contemplates spacious waiting rooms, unrestricted access areas, pre and post-operative sectors, and communication with other units. The estimated construction budget is Q48,859,198.07. The design and construction is based on the use of appropriate techniques and materials, taking advantage of the existing structure and guaranteeing the efficiency and safety of the services.
9
RECOGNITIONS BY OSSHP
Proposal to create an orderly and hierarchical plan of public recognition for individuals and organizations that have provided vital support to OSSHPs. The importance of thanking and publicly acknowledging the solidarity received to strengthen the confidence and reputation of the institution is highlighted. The construction of a legal framework, definition of types of benefactors and creation of orders and certificates are proposed.
12
INCREASE IN PATIENTS AT THE HOSPITAL
: It is proposed to increase the number of patients treated at the Obras Sociales Hospital through special efforts in the different services. The hospital currently operates on limited hours and has warned the number of clinics and specialists to improve care capacity. The demand for medical care continues to grow due to problems in public services and the high cost of private care. The proposal is justified by the growing demand, the limited service capacity, the availability of infrastructure and the dependence on donations. The general objective is to promote the growth of medical care for the disadvantaged population. Specific goals include meeting growing demand, extending hours of operation, operating year-round, and improving revenue from donations.
